ASTRONOMY DAY CELEBRATIONS@ HOME

Astronomy day is a world wide event which is celebrated twice in a year, intended to provide a means of interactions between the general public with the space science. This year it is going to be celebrated on 2nd May and 26th September,2020.

The first Astronomy day was created in 1973 by Doug Berger, then the president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California. So during this period of Covid 19, Mount Abu Public School celebrated this day with all the activities virtually. Following fun activities were conducted for different classes:

ACTIVITY-1  (Class- I)
I AM ALIEN
In this activity, students picked up some clothes from their home, made a mask from paper, used some paints and shown their skills by dressing up like an alien.

ACTIVITY -2 (Class- II)
DARE TO LAND A ROCKET

In this students were asked to use a straw, and to cover one end of the straw by a paper on which rocket is drawn. Then they have to take a chart paper on which few words were written mentioning some activities- dance, click pic, sing a song, etc. Students had to blow the air from one side of the straw, look where the rocket landed and had to perform that activity.

ACTIVITY-3  (Class-III)
MOON BUTTON CRAFT
Under this, students collected some buttons and sheets, drawn a moon on black sheet and made a collage of buttons in the shape of moon.

 ACTIVITY – 4 (Class- IV)

HANGING SOLAR SYSTEM
Students built their own creative Hanging Solar System by using paper ball or tissue paper and threads. They made it colourful by using paints and sparkles and hung on their fan.

ACTIVITY 5 (Class V)
OREO MOON PHASES
As we all know moon have different phases and each phase has its own beauty.
Students shown these phases by using different oreo biscuits on a blank sheet, where each piece of biscuit depicting different phase and making a cycle consisting all of them.

ACTIVITY 6  (Class- V)
BOTTLE ROCKET
Students of class V made rocket at home using the water bottle, used some paint to make it colorful and some glitter to make it creative and attractive.

ACTIVITY 7 (Class-VI)
GALAXY IN KITCHEN
We all love see stars and when they are seen in bunch their beauty is on another level. Isn't it would be fun in making your own galaxy by using household material. So for this activity students collected household material and represented galaxy in an innovative way.

ACTIVITY 8 (Class VI)
SPACE YOGA
Health is in an important part and doing yoga at home is essential these days. So the students did yoga and posed like:
  • Extended Mountain pose- pretend to be sun
  • Crescent moos pose- pretend to be moon
  • Warrior 3 pose-pretend to be a shooting star
  • Extended child's pose-pretend to be a comit, etc.

ACTIVITY 9 (Class VII)
WHO IS ASTRONOMER

The students imagined the picture of astronomer and drawn it using Ms Paint.

ACTIVITY 10 (Class VIII)
*INTER CLASS SPACE QUIZ*

Online quiz was also conducted for class VIII. For this quiz two representatives from each section were selected and asked some questions related to space. This quiz was played in front of all the students of class VIII online.

ACTIVITY 11 (Class IX)
LIFE ON MARS
Space is all about imagination! Students imagined that they landed on Mars for a day and drawn e-design of Mars or drawn sketches with the help of some sketch pens, pencil, colors and different objects.

ACTIVITY 12 (Class X)
SUN CLOCK
Not all learning about space has to happen at night, the sun is an important part of solar system so including learning about it is also important. Before watches were invented sun clocks were used to estimate the time of day. Students created a replica of the sun clock by using a paper plate and pencil and also decorated the plate to look like a clock and pushed the pencil through a hole in the middle. Very beautiful sun clocks were made.

ACTIVITY 13  (Class XI)
STAR NAVIGATION

To find their way, captains of ship and other explorers have been using the stars to find way for a long time. Modern astronomers still use the same technique that these ancient navigators used to survive. So the students researched about ancient sailors and learnt to navigate using the stars. This was an excellent way to spend Astronomy Day.

ACTIVITY 14 (Class XII)
CONSTELLATION AT HOME
Each constellation has a story behind it, and learning constellation can’t be overlooked when learning about astronomy. Picking out popular constellations like the Big Dipper, Orion and Taurus and at what time of the year they can be seen in the sky can be a lot of fun!
Once the constellations have been explored, it can be fun to make up new ones, complete with origins and myths behind them. Students created constellations using chalks, stickers and markers. The possibility for how and what to create are endless!

ACTIVITY 15 (Class V-XII)
EXPLORATION OF NIGHT SKY
Last but the most important one for the celebration of Astronomy Day i.e. Night Sky exploration.  Students and parents went on their terrace and clicked the beauty of night sky. They also tried to locate the constellation and seen the wonders which stars can do.

Astronomy Day was a great success wherein all parents, teachers and students thoroughly enjoyed all the activities and performed along with the students. Astronomy Day was concluded with great enthusiasm. All the students were elated and eagerly looked forward to the next session of Astronomy. It was a great learning experience for all the participants.
